Exciting plans for a new £50 million hospital for Plymouth have gone on show (Tuesday February 12) as part of a special exhibition and briefing by international architects Foster + Partners.
The proposed new centre of clinical excellence is being planned for land on the Plymouth International Medical and Technology Park, at Derriford. It will be one of the first of its kind nationally and the first building in Plymouth designed by Foster + Partners.
The team from Foster + Partners were joined by members of the 100-strong partnership of clinicians in Plymouth who are working to deliver the project with the health operator Circle.
The hospital, which will be built on land owned by the South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA), will offer world class surgical, diagnostic and treatment services, complementing existing health facilities in Plymouth and creating 250 jobs.
Outline plans were submitted in November 2007 for the scheme which will be a major boost to the city's economy and that of the region's health sector. The hospital has received widespread support from Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, members of the business community, GPs and other health professionals.
Nick Evans, a consultant ophthalmic surgeon and member of the Circle partnership in Plymouth said: "The positive reaction and support that the project has received is extremely gratifying and we're delighted that so many people in Plymouth share our excitement about what we're seeking to achieve."
Ian Thompson, Area Director for Devon and Somerset for the South West RDA, said: "This is an exciting project for Plymouth and represents a significant inward investment for the city. We're working to unlock the business potential of the region and this scheme fits well with our goal of maximising the economic benefit to Plymouth of the high quality medical and technology sector centred around Derriford.
"We are pleased to be working with Circle to bring the scheme forward at Plymouth International Medical and Technology Park and particularly interested in seeing the designs from Foster + Partners for their first ever building in Plymouth."
The exhibition at the Future Inns Hotel, on the Plymouth International Medical and Technology Park, at Derriford, also featured a model of how the proposed new building will look.
Members of the public were able to views the proposals during the afternoon and in the evening a reception event was due to be held for members of the business and medical community which was due to be attended by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth Cllr David James and the Lady Mayoress Diane James.
